- The Brecknock Stud
C
History The Brecknock Stud was founded in 1992 by Vicky Irwin. She had a dream to breed a 'vanner' stamp of active, powerful horse with the character of a horse bred for battle, combined with the strength and nature of an old fashioned working breed.. Vicky had been involved with shire horses and the ambition to cross a quality shire mare with a large PRE with a strong character was realised when 'Espsyke Ruby' was put to Tony & June Smarts' "Bodeguero X". The resulting offspring was a grey Colt named 'Brecknock Mercury'. All the Brecknock horses are named after songs by the rock band 'Queen' - following Mercury came Deacon, Barcelona, Delilah, Innuendo, Miracle, Breakthru, Bohemian Rhapsody, Made in Heaven, Kind of Magic, Tie your Mother Down, Killer Queen and the latest 'Father to Son'. The have been 4 shire mares used to breed foals by Bodeguero, all 4 relating back to the shire stallions Witney Masterpiece and Decoy Wiss. Brecknock Mercury was a true all rounder. He competed at dressage and showjumping competitions, cross-country and hunter trials, one and two-day events and started Vicky on the road to National Level Driving Trials, qualifying for and competing at the National Championships for four consecutive years. He went to Ireland and worked on the film set of King Arthur, being ridden by stunt performers. He won the Performance and Versatilty awards at the BAPSH breed show for two years. His brothers and sisters have proved to be just as versatile and very sound, both physically and mentally. In 2011 Vicky added a little Morgan mare to her herd. This mare was bred at the infamous Monnington Stud. She too was put to Bodeguero and bred a filly foal, born in 2012. She then had a Colt foal in 2015, who is Bodeguero's last foal. The filly is to be broken to ride & drive in the spring of 2016, and we are hoping for great things from this bright little girl. |
